Freak car crash shuts down major U.S. oil pipeline

MarketWatch -- -- A major oil pipeline will be shut down for several days after a spill and fire near Chicago caused by a freak car accident.

An SUV and a Ford Mustang crashed into each other and hit a small above-ground section of an Enbridge Inc. (ENB, ENB.T) oil pipeline in an industrial park in New Lenox, Ill., causing a spill and fire that killed two and injured three, said Harold Damron, a spokesman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The pipeline was shut down within hours of the accident early Saturday morning and will remain shut down until Thursday morning, an Enbridge spokeswoman said.

The downed Enbridge Line 14/64 pipeline normally transports 317,000 barrels of oil a day along Enbridge's Lakehead System, which is the largest crude oil pipeline to the U.S. from the U.S.'s larg

I would like to inform all of you ignorant "adults" that two friends of mine were lost along with three more being injured. Accidents DO happen, and not saying it was the smartest thing to do but they were just having fun. They weren't trying to hurt anyone, or "raise gas prices" as you all want to bitch about. How about instead of complaining about the gas prices, you get your lazy asses off the computer and go vote or do something about it. TWO MEN THAT ARE GREAT PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY LOST THEIR LIVES and God forbid their families come on here and read about you "ADULTS" complaining about GAS PRICES. THERE WERE TWO LIVES LOST! My prayers go out to the Lenz & Orel families. May angels lead you in fellas <3 xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo RIP!!!

Any kind of flammable pipeline needs to be protected from possible 'accidents' at all times. Make sure guards are installed and safety precautions taken to make any above ground pipeline safe. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle is, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

There is one within 1.5 miles of my parent's house. It is sited in such a way as to make it difficult to hit unless you are really crazy. There are those stupid enough to do it like the idiot driving his car with three friends down Lake Parkway at over 120MPH up an off ramp, through the intersection with busy Layton Avenue, through the foot thick concrete barrier at the other side, falling over 30' down onto a gravel access road causing a big crash killing everyone. I saw the scene minutes later from the Layton Avenue bridge with the fire crews putting out the flames. You can't protect against that no matter what you do.

This does sound like a freak accident, but you would think the pipeline or highway engineers could develop ways to protect the pipeline from something like this.
